Big Sand

While at Dualchas Architects Photography by Huntley Hedworth

The original cottage was cold, damp and dark but structurally sound and with lovely views over the beach at Big Sand, Gairloch and to the mountains beyond. The brief was for a small holiday let as a retirement income that could be managed alone. The cottage was damp proofed and repaired and the extension restored but with a large corner window to take in the view. Double hung sliding sashes and full height windows were installed along with an electric boiler and wood burner and a new kitchen and shower room. The walls, roof and windows were all left or painted the same light grey as the porcelain floor tiles. A stone enclosure and bench to the front of the house and new modern classic furniture completes the project.

A forgotten tiny gem has been brought back to life with the dignified patience of its owner.

“I am delighted with the conversion.”
